Drills
First and foremost cordless battery-powered drills allow for mobility. You can go anywhere you need to go at home or on the job site without having to drag a cord along for the ride. It reduces trip hazards and allows you to work when there is no power to the job site or storm clean-up zones. And in such cases where you are working without power on the site, you can use portable power stations such as the EGO Nexus line of products to charge extra batteries.
During our research, we noticed that DeWalt rose above the others. The ability to purchase the tool as a stand-alone item or in some sort of combo with other tools or drill bits added to the compact and lightweight design, the reliability of the brand, and the fact that you can use different amp-hour sized batteries with DeWalt’s 20V Max battery system.
Even though DeWalt is one of our favorites we can’t overlook brands like Black + Decker which offers great bang for your buck drills that any DIYer would be delighted with. Makita has a 12-volt slim profile drill that comes in at just 2 lbs and of course, their more robust offerings of the 18 and 20-volt models that power through most any job. Hitachi (Pictured Above) now known as Metabo HPT, has set up a line of tools that all run on the 18v lithium-ion batteries. These make good alternatives to DeWalt and Mikita.

One problem that has been faced by many manufacturers using lithium-ion batteries is that the battery will lose its charge after a few recharges. This unfortunately is a combination of the batteries having a “memory” and the consumer not realizing this and charging the battery after every use. From the consumer standpoint to lessen this from happening fully charge the battery before first-time use and then completely drain the battery. By doing this you can set the memory of the battery. On the manufacturing side of this issue brands, like DeWalt, are integrating new technologies into the batteries that eliminate the battery memory.
There are hundreds of drills on the market from quality manufacturers and cheap imports and we can’t review every single brand and model. This is why consumer feedback is so important to us. If you have an experience, either good or bad, with a certain brand or model we would like to hear about it. We’ve included a form at the bottom of the page for your convenience.
