Air compressors operate on a fundamental principle, involving a drive system—either electric or gas-powered—that drives the pump. The pump’s function is to draw in ambient air, compress it, and then direct the compressed air through a check valve into a storage tank. Once the pressure in the tank reaches a predetermined threshold, the compressor’s pump automatically shuts off.
Efficiency and Operational Characteristics
The efficiency and operational characteristics of air compressors are influenced by their duty cycle, which is expressed as a percentage. This percentage represents the proportion of time the compressor can operate within a specified period. For instance, a compressor with a 50% duty cycle means the compressor will run for 5 minutes and rest for 5 minutes in a 10-minute cycle. Understanding these parameters is crucial for selecting a compressor that meets the needs of various applications, ensuring optimal performance and longevity of the equipment.
Choosing the Right Air Compressor

Choosing the right air compressor involves navigating various options, including single-stage, two-stage, and oil-free models, as well as deciding between single-tank or twin-tank configurations. Additionally, tank orientations—vertical, horizontal, pancake, or hot dog—further complicate the decision-making process.
To simplify this, we’ll focus on five key features of air compressors: single tank, twin tank, single stage, two stage, and oil-free. Each of these features plays a crucial role in determining the suitability of a compressor for specific applications and operational needs. Understanding these aspects will help you select the most efficient and effective compressor for your requirements.
Features of Air Compressors
Single stage air compressors are a great tool for hobbyists and DIYers. These types of compressors usually have 1 piston on the pump that forces the compressed air into the holding tank but they can have multiple piston, all of which would be the same sized piston. They’re also lightweight, cost-effective, and most, but not all will have a max PSI rating of 125 with some models having a PSI rating of 135.
We have an Article about Single Stage Air Compressors started but it’s still a work in progress. We could use your help with it though. The feedback forms at the bottom of the page can be used to share your particular experiences with this type of compressor. You can view our article here:
Two stage air compressors, sometimes referred to as dual stage air compressors, always have at least 2 pistons to drive the air into the storage tank. The first larger piston drives air through an intercooler and into the second piston chamber were it is further compressed before being cooled again moved to the storage tank. Two stage air compressors are good for jobs where a tool may require a higher PSI and it also allows for longer operating times for tools with lower psi requirements. The Max PSI rating for most, but not all, two stage air compressors is 175 PSI.
Most air compressors used in commercial or industrial applications are two stage air compressors. However, there are good models available to pros and DIYers for remodels jobs or home construction sites.
Here is a little bit more about two-stage air compressors. Article about Two-stage Air Compressors
We could use your help with some of the details. If you have a two-stage compressor and want to share your experience using it with us feel free to use the feedback form at the bottom of the page.
Because TekEons is an environmentally conscious company we have chosen to highlight oil free air compressors over oil injected models. However, to provide you with a fair and unbiased comparisons we will be writing an article about oil injected air compressors in the near future.
Oil free air compressors use alterative methods of lubrication such as water or Teflon coatings in place of the oil. While the initial costs of these types of compressors are higher compared to other types the operation costs of the machine are lower over the lifetime due to the fact that you aren’t having to change oil or oil filters. Our TekResearchers are still compiling some data for our review and comparison article found here: Article About Oil Free Air Compressors
However, if you have some experience using an oil free air compressor and would like to leave us feedback or share your experiences you can do so through our feedback form found on each TekEons page.
Single tank air compressors come in 4 distinct styles. Vertical, Horizontal, Pancake and Hotdog. While the latter two might make you chuckle a bit they are two of the most popular types of single tank compressors on the market. As for vertical and horizontal tanks the largest difference between them is the amount floor space that’s taken up on your jobsite or in you workshop / garage.
There is a lot to single tank air compressors. We want to be able to provide you with good comparisons and reviews so our TekEons Researchers are working hard to gather all the info for our content creators. You can see what we have put together so far here: Article about Single Tank Air Compressors
We would like to hear about your real world experiences. you can share your experiences and stories with us through the feedback forms at the bottom of any TekEons page.
The basic concept for twin tank air compressors is taking two small tanks, say like hot dog sized tanks, and stacking them on top of each other to increase air storage compacity with the trade off of this type being bulkier. Even though it does have a larger capacity for storage it does not equate to being able to use tools that require more PSI. If you need a compressor that will accommodate larger tools check out our section above about two stage air compressors.
We are still working on some of our reviews for twin tank air compressors and haven’t quite finished the work. However, you can view our work so far here: Article about Twin tank Air Compressors
We would like to include some of your feedback in our article too. If you have some knowledge about or experience using a twin tank air compressor we would like to hear about it. You can conveniently submit feedback through the form at the bottom of this or any TekEons page.
